The college essay: 650 words, in their voice.

One-on-one college essay counseling with me, Nico — from blank page to submitted application. The essay is the one part of the application still fully in your student's control. My job is to pull out the small, true story only they can tell, then coach the drafts until it shines — without ever replacing their voice with mine.

From blank page to submit

A season-long process with a deadline at the end — here's the road, and where it gets bumpy.

The brainstorm

Mining for the small, true stories — the ones students dismiss as "not impressive."

the best story is usually the third one they mention

The messy draft

Written fast and badly, on purpose. Perfectionism is the enemy of draft one.

Revisions

Where the essay is actually made — structure, specificity, and the ending it deserves.

cutting hurts — do it anyway

The supplementals

"Why us?" essays and UC PIQs — a portfolio, planned so material gets reused smartly.

they multiply fast

Submit

Final reads, final cuts, and an application that sounds like the student at their best.

How I coach the essay

Ten years of reading these has taught me what admissions readers already know: the good ones are specific, honest, and unmistakably seventeen years old — in the best way.

Find the real story

Not the resume, not the big game — the small moment that actually changed something. Every student has one; most need help seeing it.

Edit, never replace

I mark up drafts the way a good editor does — questions, cuts, "more of this" — and the student does the rewriting. The voice stays theirs.

Run it as a project

Deadlines mapped backward, supplementals planned as a portfolio, and a weekly rhythm so senior fall doesn't become a fire drill.

Essay season usually overlaps with SAT/ACT season — one tutor keeps the whole fall coordinated instead of competing for your student's evenings.

No — full stop. Admissions readers are professionally good at spotting adult prose in a teenager's application, and a ghostwritten essay is a risk, not a shortcut.

What I do is harder and works better: draw the real story out, coach the drafts, and edit in a way that makes your student sound like their best self — still recognizably themselves.
